Maartje in Butterfly Yin yoga pose.

Butterfly pose is one of the Yin yoga poses that I love most. It has beautiful healing qualities for our bodies & beyond✨

In my Yin yoga teacher training with founder Sarah Powers (Spain 2016), she called Butterfly a “Power Pose” as it stimulates all 5 great energy pathways/ meridian pairs in our bodies.

Yin yoga is based on the ancient and holistic wisdom of Chinese medicine & acupuncture. It works like acupuncture without needles by using the pressure point of our bodies with the ground. To simplify things: while holding Butterfly for 3 - 5 minutes we stimulate all 5 meridians & the 5 organ pairs & the 5 elements with the emotions/ qualities they are connected with: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. All in just one pose!

This makes Butterfly pose very suitable to practice during every season and with every emotion. As it will help create balance where there’s a mental, emotional, physical, energetic and/or spiritual imbalance.

On top of that: Butterfly doesn’t need a so called “counter pose”. Whereas any other pose does (f.e. we move into a forward bend after backbend and vice versa). Butterfly pose is fully enough in itself✨

Softening variations for Butterfly yin yoga pose:

🦋 Placing a cushion under your buttocks (it’ll help you in bending forward) & under the knees to find a stable & grounded posture for your unique body.

🦋 You may use your hands to touch the ground alongside the legs /or letting them rejoice together in front of your head.

🦋 Butterfly (as any other yin pose) is not about pushing the body down into a certain shape. Let gravity do its work and observe where your body leads you in the moment, while honoring its sacred boundaries. If that leads you f.e. to sit up-straight then that’s the perfect posture for your body right now in which its healing qualities will work best.

Enjoy your yin practice!
